Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Lapbook

We made our first lapbook this past week based on the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.  First I should answer what a lapbook is.  A lapbook is a file or folder laid out in a creative way, usually incorporating mini-books, drawings, graphs, etc. that center around a single subject.  Basically it is a way to show off a unit study.  I just learned about them at the homeschool convention last week and I wanted to try one out.

On the top left we have a pull-out book (folded accordion style).  It is "my name" and it has my son's name, one letter printed on a coconut.  Under that is a mini-book titled "What color is the tree?"  Each page is a different color, and Sebastian loves to "read" that book by himself.  In the center is counting coconuts, and on each page is a tree that Sebastian colored and then pasted coconuts on (based on what number it said on the bottom of the sheet),  On the right side is a coconut tree we made by outlining his hand and arm.  He uses the upper and lower case letters (which are in the pouches on the bottom) and acts out the story on the hand-coconut tree.  He also loves to play a matching game and matches the uppercase to the lowercase letter for points.

Reading his name on the coconuts

This is a great way to sneak in some learning when he thinks all he is doing is making crafty-crafties!
