Journal 1/20/2012

In my life this week…
We just booked a mini-vacation for Matthew's 30th birthday in March!  This past June we went to the Great Wolf Lodge and everyone in the family loved it.  Matthew decided he wanted to go back to celebrate his 3 decades of life.  Suh-weet! It is fairly inexpensive and we have such a blast.  It is just for a weekend, but we are going to love it. There is even a Steak 'n Shake right next door! Less than 2 months to go...
In our homeschool this week…
We had a great week!  We started the week with a successful new Sight Word Bingo game that Sebastian ate up and wanted to play every day.  We ended the week with a couple Star Wars Days that made Sebastian's week and made school a party!  I love having weeks like this.  It helps remind me that I am doing something right.
While at Ollie's yesterday, I picked up a Kindergarten workbook that I want to do with Sebastian.  It includes a bunch of things I hadn't thought about doing with him, so I am using as inspiration to fill out his education this year.  I also picked up a "First Grade Bootcamp" book filled with reusable games, manipulatives, and other items that Sebastian and I can dive into in February or March. This child's math skills are through the roof.  I am so happy he takes after his father.  Math is never an issue for Sebastian.  He loves work problems and will ask for them to pass the time when we are in the car.
I am inspired by…
Pinterest.  That place is amazing and a time sink all at the same time. I love it for giving me ideas and inspiration, but it also takes away from my sleep. I love it more than hate it, but when 1am comes knocking I start to hate it a bit, lol.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
We are celebrating three birthdays this weekend!  Today is a friend of Sebastian's birthday, and he is turning 5. (Where did the time go?) Then tomorrow is my father-in-law's birthday and my mother-in-law's birthday was last week so we might be stopping over at their house to bring them some supper.  It should be a fun weekend.
My favorite thing this week was…
How awesome our homeschooling went!  Also, getting to bootcamp on Thursday after having a week off of working out since I was so sick. Uhg.
Questions/thoughts I have…
Now that my daughter is 16 months old, I want to start doing tot school with her.  The first thing I am interested in doing are sensory bins.  Sebastian wants to be her teacher, and I thought if they played together with the sensory bin it could be a great way for Sebastian to show her some fine motor skills.  Where do I start? What do I need?  I guess it is research time for me.

I’m reading…
I just started Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis... and then I left it in my in-law's car.  I think I read one page so far.  I was annoyed at myself, but that's okay.  It is the first book of Lewis' Space Trilogy and the main character is based on Lewis' friend in real like, J.R.R. Tolkien.  I am so excited to read it.  I have been waiting for my library to get it to me for almost a year (I was 7th in the queue to get it!).  I am also going to have my husband read it because I heard rave reviews for this book/trilogy so I think it will be a treat to read.
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them. ~Leo Buscaglia

For the sensory bins, just grab a rubbermaid tub {or even a dishpan}. I loved the rubbermaid tub since I could put the lid on and put it up. :) There are some great inexpensive things you can put into the tubs too! Be sure to check out some of the fun ideas that we've posted at Totally Tots: http://totallytots.blogspot.com/search/label/What%27s%20in%20the%20Tub%3F

Otherwise, the dollar section at Target and the Dollar Tree always have some great seasonal things!! :)
