Sweating is HEALTHY. It is GOOD FOR YOU. It is a natural detox pathway and stopping your body from releasing toxins through your underarms is only going to hurt you, especially if you are already suffering from an ailment that makes it hard to detox (ahem, gene mutations). Even though sweat is a good thing, stink is not.
I have tried a number of natural deodorants. Some don't work. Some have baking soda in the recipe and cause rashes on the skin, even while using bentonite clay to try to minimize the negative effects. Others work but are extremely expensive. I decided to go to The Internet to find something I can make myself, that works, and for a fraction of the price. Guess what. I am lazy. I don't want to actually spend time making myself a deodorant so I never got around to melting coconut oil and making some concoction of arrow root powder and whatever else. In came a pin sent by God to me: a deodorant spray! This is more my style.
I based my recipe on this one, but with some modifications. First, I didn't have vodka so I used rubbing alcohol instead. Second, I don't want to make a big batch because I am afraid of it potentially "spoiling" since I don't use preservatives so I scaled the recipe down quite a bit. Third, I mixed up the essential oils a bit.
DIY Deodorant Spray
- 1/2 ounce apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 ounce alcohol (you could also use water or witch hazel, but I workout and stink so I need the extra odor protection)
- 4 drops lemongrass essential oil
- 4 drops lemon essential oil
- 2 drops lavender essential oil
- 2 drops melalueca essential oil
Directions:
- Put it all in a spray bottle. Shake and go! (It is simple, perfect for a lazy bones mom like me)
Because I used alcohol in the spray, I follow up my spray with a little coconut oil to keep my underarms from drying out. If you use water, you wouldn't need to also lotion your pits, but that is totally up to you. I may even make a roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and a drop of lemongrass, lemon, lavender, and melalueca just for this purpose!
Let me know if you try this and what you think. I love this recipe and have been stink-free for weeks because of it. Thanks, oils!
