Today I want to introduce you to The Magic Stories from Allsaid & Dunn, LLC, publishers of The Reading Game and authors of the Wordly Wise series. This can be used as a follow up program after using The Reading Game, but that is no necessary. We did not use The Reading Game and we did not feel left out or confused by using The Magic Stories solo.
The Magic Stories is a set of six stories for the 2nd-3rd grade level reader. They are perfect to use on the computer or a tablet, but can also be printed out on regular letter paper from your computer. Each story comes with a "Naughty 40" which is a list of 40 words that will probably be difficult for your child to read in that story. There are worksheets to go over reading comprehension as well as creative writing to expand your lessons with the students. These stories are downloadable and about twenty pages each.

- The Magic Box
Kaelyn's favorite story was The Magic Joke. The story is about two kingdoms that are in a terrible war. The princess of one side hated the war and wanted it to end. While outside of the palace she came upon a magic joke that made those that heard the joke incapable of doing anything else but laughing in merriment. Her father, the king, decided to ueg the joke against his enemies. He thought he was going to take over the other kingdom, but the princess tricked him and ended up ending the war by using the joke on both sides. Kaelyn liked the story because there was a princess and everyone was laughing. She also liked that everyone lived happily ever after.
Some of the "naughty 40" words included: dispute, village, gurgling, and uncontrollable. I felt that these books were a little beyond her reading capability, but with some help, she did well reading them. She is on the young 2nd grade level right now and by next year I don't think she would have much trouble reading these stories.
The extra pages included a true/false maze, finish the sentence reading comprehension worksheets, an imagine worksheet to help kids think deeper about the story, finish the story for creative writing practice, plus a reading assessment and "naughty 40" assessment pages. These pages are great for homeschool portfolios!
I liked that the stories all had good moral lessons in them. Any fun activity that also bolsters character building is a win-win in my book! Kaelyn enjoyed being mostly independent while reading them, which gave her more confidence in her reading. The naughty 40 words were challenging, but with me right there with her, she did not get upset or frustrated while reading.
