Beginning of the Year

Today is the official start to the new year. Woohoo! It is a very hot and humid day today, so we are staying indoors and school time came and went very quickly this morning. We got through everything I wanted to do and we could have done more, but I didn't want to over do it.  We got through an evaluation, phonics, math, art, handwriting, and social studies today.  He enjoyed every minute of it, and that is what matters most right now.

Evaluation
I did my beginning of the year evaluation with Sebastian.  He did well, which leads me to believe this year will be easy for him.  He did think R was a K, and 6 & 9 he thought were P's. Besides that he knew his shapes, colors, letters and numbers.  He didn't want to sing the alphabet song, but I don't think that is as important as recognizing the letters.

Art Book
I thought a fun year-long project can be an art book. I told him to draw a design for the cover of his artbook.  He decided to draw a picture of himself.  He is a bit of a minimalist.

Family Tree
Today we were talking about our family and the roles that each of us have in our family.  Together we cut out and made his own family tree.

This is just the first day of a long journey for us.  I am not going to blog about every day, but I wanted to document our first step.  Tomorrow we will be visiting the library and taking out some good books.

I started using http://www.homeschoolskedtrack.com/ to track my activities, days, hours, field trips, etc. for homeschool records.  I will try it out for a couple weeks and post a review as a homeschool mom of a preschooler.

I love the family tree. So cute. I used Homeschoolskedtrack last year. It worked really well and I was happy with it for a while, but decided I needed to move to homeschooltracker plus for the added reports. But I kind of miss homeschoolskedtracker sometimes.

The family tree is nice! Did you print it from a template or just free hand it? I want to work on one for our classroom. Good luck with your new school year!
