Beric the Briton Review

My family was incredibly excited to find Beric the Briton from Heirloom Audio Productions in the mail. It came right before a road trip, and their radio drama adaptions of adventures in history are riveting and keep the kids happy when we are in the car for long periods of time.



Earlier in the year we enjoyed Heirloom Audio Production's The Dragon and The Raven. After having thoroughly enjoyed that radio drama, I knew we would enjoy Beric the Briton as well. It did not disappoint and we LOVED the adventure.

The people at Heirloom Audio Productions have done a marvelous job of bringing history alive in a way that highlights Christian virtues and always has a Christian worldview in their audio dramas. Beric the Briton is over two hours of an audio adventure for children ages 6+, so the whole family can enjoy the adventure together! With a cast that includes John Rhys-Davies, Brian Cox, Brian Blessed, Tom Baker, Honeysuckle Weeks, Cathy Sara, and more, the quality of the drama is like no other.

What is a radio drama?

A radio drama is what is sounds like. It is an adventure on CD. You listen to the dialogue and narration with sound effects, beautiful music, and ambiance.  It turned my car into a time machine and the kids were transported

The kids made the pictures in their minds as they listened. Because there isn't a video component, they had to use their imaginations and it engaged them into active listening. They didn't make a peep while they were listening to the story, so it clearly had them enraptured.

What is the story about?

Beric the Briton is a story about grace, sacrifice, and redemption. This adventure takes place during the Roman invasion of ancient Britannia. Beric and his best friend Bodouc are captured by the Romans and end up serving Emperor Nero. They are introduced to the story of "Christus" and Beric and Boudoc begin to question their past as pagans. There is action, adventure, and a little romance blended in to make everyone intrigued with the story.

What did we think?

I give it two thumbs up. My nine-year-old, five-year-old, and two-year-old were quite for the entire road trip thanks to this awesome production.  My 9-year-old boy loved everything, but wasn't a fan of the romance. My 5-year-old girl said she loved the whole thing. My 2-year-old somehow managed to be quiet while we listened, so even if he didn't understand everything that was going on, he must have enjoyed the music and the sound effects.
