Homeschool Legacy Review

Once-a-Week Studies {Homeschool Legacy}

We're getting ready for Thanksgiving by adding the Once-a-Week Micro-Studies Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims from Homeschool Legacy to our weekly schedule.  I don't often do unit studies or combine the kids in studying something together, but I decided to try this out and see how it would go.

Who is this for?

This micro-study, as well as other ones like Cooking Up History with the Founding Presidents, can bu used for students in grades 1-8. The wide range is useful for doing this as a family and combining subjects for simplicity in homeschooling.

What is it?

The Thanksgiving Micro-Study is a downloadable Grab-N-Go PDF which gives six weeks of lessons.  It is designed to have three 30-minute lessons a week, but you could do each week's lesson in a day  if you wanted. We chose to speed up the study and we worked daily since we are excited for the upcoming holiday.

Each week had a theme and the titles for each week are as follows:

  • Week 1: The Scrooby Separatists
  • Week 2: The Voyage
  • Week 3: At Home in Plymouth
  • Week 4: Happy Thanksgiving
  • Week 5: The Puritans
  • Week 6: Merry Christmas

Before we started the lessons I went to the library and found some suggested books from the plans. Books are always a great way to engage my kids in learning.  Each week is filled with different things to do. This micro-unit hits upon reading, vocabulary, government, history, art appreciation, geography, language, cooking, Bible, and crafts. There are sections to read, links to outside sources, pictures to look at, and plenty of activity suggestions to keep kids busy.

Even my 2YO got in on some of the activities!

How did we like it?

The kids and I enjoyed working through the lessons in this Thanksgiving Micro-Study. The kids enjoyed making Indian pudding for dessert and learning how to talk like a Pilgrim.  I enjoyed the link to the Kirk Cameron movie, Monumental and that the last week is dedicated to Christmas.  You almost get two studies in one because this is a six-week study, which is a little longer than the other micro-studies. We haven't gotten to that week yet but the suggested read loud is A Christmas Carol and I plan on reading the book to the kids and then we can watch a few movies and discuss the differences in the book and movies. (FYI: I love A Muppet Christmas Carol)

This study fits in nicely to what we are already doing in other areas of homeschool. Sebastian is working on learning the North East states. In co-op we are learning about the founding of America. Isn't it great when two (or more) things come together?  It's like I am beating learning over their heads without being brutal about it. Win for me!

I was surprised how easy teaching this study was for me. There was not much for me to prepare besides getting some books fro the library. Additionally, it was a breeze teaching both m first grader and my fourth grader together. The only thing I had to do was tell Sebastian to give Kaelyn a chance to answer a question first. (He liked to jump in and explain away for days, which was frustrating Kaelyn)

Price

Each of these micro-studies cost $12
