Review: How do we Know God is Really There?

Apologia has a new book out called How do we Know God is Really There? I was able to check it out and read to to my kids to see what we thought about it.

Hardcover books = sturdier in this house. My kids are rough!

It is written by Melissa Cain Travis and illustrated by Christopher Voss.

From Apologia:

Thomas and his father escape to their backyard tree house most evenings to watch the night sky through a telescope. Thomas is dazzled by what he sees of God’s creation, but he has questions. “Dad, how do we know God is out there?” he asks one night. “I know the Bible says He’s there. But how do we really know that’s true?” Together, Thomas and his father begin to examine the cosmological evidence for God’s existence. This is the first in an exciting new series of picture books designed to introduce kids to important questions of the Christian faith in terms even pre-readers can understand. Read this aloud with your family, and you’ll come away knowing that “the heavens declare the glory of God and the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:1). 

At first I was apprehensive about this book. I thought it would be cheesy and perhaps talk about "young earth" which is a theory I don't believe is the truth. Luckily, the book was better than I expected. It never mentioned an age of the universe, so young earth and old earth families can easily read it without being offended. It was also pleasantly written, without cheese. I enjoyed reading the book with my kids.

A couple thoughts about this book:

• My two-year-old daughter was bored within the first couple of pages so she went and did her own thing while I read it to my 5 year old. I am hoping to read it to her when she is older. It was just a bit too long for a two-year-old to handle.
• My five-year-old son loved the space talk.
• My son commented that he thought the illustrations were silly.  After we read the book, we went back through the pages and he pointed out the funny faces on the boy in the book. He also commented that in a lot of the pictures, the boy only has one eye (apparently that bothered him, lol!)
• My son liked the book and since he is so logical he loved how they used logic to solve the question.
• For a kid who is already in love with space and science, this book was a great little way to add some apologetics using things he loves.
• This book can be read in a Catholic family without worry of any contradiction. It is a great non-denominational Christian book that can work for any family.

He did try to read the book by himself (I am not sure how much he read)
