Teaching and music are both passions for me. Teaching others about music is my favorite way to make the world a better place. Music can be therapeutic, transformative, and can enhance lives. The thought that I could have a small part in someone's life and make them better because of it is why I do what I do. I hope to inspire others to love music in a way that is personal for them.

What is my typical process for working with new students?

The first lesson we have together is a day where I mostly listen and watch. I will take a ton of notes for myself in order to make a game plan for our lessons in the future. I will assess physical technique, music reading skills, musical aptitude, and general music skills. After assessment, we will have a conversation of my expectations, your expectations, and we will develop a course of action together.

Fees and Schedules

I make available 42 private lessons per year. Master classes, group lessons, and performance opportunities may also be offered. Choose one of the following options.

Payments

• Payments should be made during the month that they are due and have the month marked in the memo line in the case of check payments.
• Full payment is due even if you do not attend all the lessons.
• Acceptable forms of payment include cash, check, or PayPal. You will receive a receipt.
• Payment is due by the first lesson of the month.

Scheduling, Attendance, and Cancellations

• Lessons are weekly at the scheduled time. Notification of at least 24 hours is required for lesson cancellation. I will attempt to make-up the lesson at a different time. Please do not come to the lesson if you are sick. Notification by phone, text, or email is acceptable.
• If a lesson is missed without notification, a make-up lesson will not be offered.
• Individual arrangements can be made for prolonged illness (broken bones, surgery etc).
• If I must cancel a lesson I will make every effort to reschedule it.
• Since lessons are in my home, I will never cancel lessons because of weather conditions. It is up to the discretion of the parent/guardian as to whether or not to have a lesson. I will make up lessons for reasonable weather-related cancellations.
• There will be 42 lessons offered during the course of a year. This allows 10 weeks of holidays, vacations, and “sick days” throughout the year. A calendar will be posted to track lessons.

Parents’ Responsibilities

• As “home teacher” you will determine the amount of daily listening & practice, as well as attitude and level of commitment of your son or daughter. Daily listening & practice are a must!
• You will need to take accurate notes at lessons to ensure effective practice at home. In addition, you will be responsible for creating an enthusiastic & enjoyable learning environment at home.
• It is a tough job, but you’re the only one who can do it!!

Lesson Decorum

• If you arrive early, come in quietly and listen to the lesson in progress.
• You should get your instrument ready, but do not disturb the student who is working.
• If you arrive late, do not expect the lesson to be extended to make up the time.
• Siblings are welcome at lessons, but must have something quiet to do.

Recitals and/or Performance Opportunities

• Performances are important for students. There will be at least one performance opportunity a year in order to develop performance skills and gain confidence.
• Recitals will be coordinated at my discretion.
• You may be charged a recital fee in order to secure a location. More information will be made available closer to a recital date.

Group Lessons, Master Classes, and Summer Lessons

• Group lessons and master classes may be offered occasionally throughout the year. These are important classes for the students in order to get them ready for a recital and to hear each other play.
• These are not optional. Group lessons and master classes do not cost extra unless a room rental is required.
• Summer lessons are not optional. A minimum of six lessons are required from June-August in order to retain your spot for the fall.

Who is Miss Elyse?

Elyse  received her Bachelor of Science, Education in music with a concentration in violin and viola from Millersville University.  She served as principle violist all four years at Millersville and was awarded the Shar Music Award her junior year.  Prior to college, Elyse earned a Zezwitz Music Award and performed with County, District, Regional, and All-State Orchestra.  She was also a member of the Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra with which she toured Canada and the United Kingdom.  After college, Elyse taught elementary strings and general music at Lebanon School District.  She currently performs in the Central PA area for various ensembles and orchestras. In addition to her performances, she is a contributing writer for Home & School Mosaics, specializing in a music column for home school families. Elyse teaches music classes in local home school cooperatives. In the summer Elyse has been teaching a summer music camp at State Street Academy of Music since 2009 and became faculty in 2011. Elyse has over 15 years experience teaching private lessons.

Music is incredibly important for our lives, and I want to be able to share these gifts with others.
