Make-A-State Activity Review

Homeschooling in Pennsylvania means we are required to teach "history of the United States and Pennsylvania" as part of the homeschool law. Home School in the Woods has an easy way for us to accomplish that goal with Hands-On History Activity-Paks Make-A-State. Having used Home School in the Woods before, I knew that it would be full of fun activities to do and that it would be a great way to check off this requirement for the year.




This Activity-Pack is filled with tons of ways to study a state.There are twenty activities for each state including State Name, state industry/ agriculture/ climate, wildlife, state recipes, state seal and flag, government, landmarks, history and so much more. This could be an easy unit study. We touched on history, civics, government, science, art, music, and we could easily add biographies and reading to round it out to a full unit study.  With there being 50 states in our country, this unit study could take a year or more to do!  (I think you could also do it faster if you did less for each state or just one state per region) There is also a bonus "Name That State" file folder game.

We colored the cover to be very colorful!  Our motto is "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence"  Coloring the pictures was my daughter's favorite part of the project.

Top left is how Pennsylvania got it's name. There is a map where we put large cities, important rivers, our tallest mountain, neighboring states, mountain range, and more. The map is blank and you can do a number of things with it. The keys are "Key Facts" about PA. The bottom left is a recipe box.

William Penn brought a colony to practice free religion. He named "Penns Woods" after his father. My kids hate writing so I wrote everything down, but we talked, colored, cut and glued together. 

The recipe for PA was a cheese steak sandwich. I would like to add pork and sauerkraut, sandwiches with fries on them, sand tarts, and whoopie pies as other recipes that should be put in for PA. My son's favorite part of this project was going out and getting cheese steak sandwiches one day. He requested making whoopie pies, but I haven't tackled that yet.

You also get a bonus page on each state. We read through it and highlighted interesting facts and people. I learned that PA is the 2nd state to enter the union. I am not surprised but I didn't know it.

The instructions for the activities are clear and easy to follow.

There are more Activity-Packs available to buy and download including The Old Testament, The New Testament, Composers, and Artists. I am interesting in composers and artists because I don't do enough music and art appreciation in my homeschool and that would fill a whole.
